SRT and VTT caption files for your videos

Use transcript1 as a subtitle generator for a YouTube video or an uploaded recording. Download an SRT or WebVTT caption file, review it before publishing, then attach it to your player.

  • SRT and WebVTT files from one transcript
  • Speaker labels in captions when you ask
  • YouTube links and uploaded files

How it works

Standard caption files
srt returns application/x-subrip and vtt returns text/vtt, one cue per segment.
Timed to the media
Cue times come from the transcript's segment start and end times.
Speaker labels
Set diarize to true and captions carry Speaker 1: prefixes in SRT and voice tags in VTT.
Your own recordings
Upload an mp4, mov, webm, mkv or audio file and caption it, up to 2 GB.
Same price
1 credit per media minute, rounded up, for YouTube captions and AI transcription.

WebVTT

Generate subtitles from video as WebVTT

HTML5 video players read WebVTT through a track element. Save the response as a .vtt file.

format=vtt
curl "https://api.transcript1.com/v1/transcriptions/tr_8fK2Lm0PqRsTuVwXyZaBcD?format=vtt" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TRANSCRIPT1_API_KEY" \
  -o captions.vtt

SRT

Download an SRT subtitle file

Use the SRT file in a video editor or hosting platform that accepts it. Review the text and cue times before publishing.

format=srt

Player

Add captions to video with a track element

Point a track element at the WebVTT file you saved. transcript1 produces the caption file; it does not burn subtitles into the video.

Frequently asked questions

Something missing? Ask support

Are auto-generated captions ready to publish?

Treat them as a draft. Machine transcripts can contain mistakes, so review names, terms and punctuation before you publish captions.

Do you guarantee accessibility compliance?

No. Captions are one part of an accessible video. Check your own legal and quality requirements.

Can I caption a YouTube video?

You can transcribe public and unlisted YouTube videos and download the result as SRT or VTT. For a video you own, uploading the file works too.
